That's... No, that's not... Everything about this is wrong.
Bionic reading method does not increase reading speed/comprehension. And "scanning" a few letters to "complete" the word is not how efficient and accurate reading works. Literacy is being able to identify every letter, and have the background knowledge to understand the whole word, and to understand sentence structure and syntax to meaningfully put together a sentence, and finally to be able to follow each sentence to comprehend the message of the text. There's a lot to the science and theories of literacy and to teaching reading. This... This is so far from it.
Bionic reading method is a new idea and so far studies are demonstrating lack of supportive evidence and is largely being criticized by researchers. At best, it's not slowing readers down. Some speculate it may be having a placebo effect. But seriously: if you're having trouble with reading comprehension, bionic reading method is not going to fix it.
Also, this cannot be emphasized enough: reading speed is not the goal of literacy. Accurate reading is the goal. If you can comprehend the text, then you are literate, even if it takes you a little longer to read the text than someone else. I can read a 400 page novel in 6-7 hours. My friend needs quadruple that amount of time. We are both fluent readers though, because we are able to accurately comprehend and critically think about the text. I am no more fluent than her because I'm quicker than she is any more fluent than me because she is slower. Speed is worth absolutely nothing if you do not comprehend the material.

#1160 How can a person control a bionic limb?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How can a person control a bionic limb? There are generally four ways a person can control a bionic limb. They can use a special harness that can open or close hooks. They can have sensors that read electrical signals through the skin. They can attach directly to the nerves. They can have sensors that read the electrical signals directly from the muscles. Losing a limb is not an uncommon occurrence. It is estimated that over one million people lose a limb or are born without a limb every year. The causes for this limb loss vary. America has about 500,000 limb amputations a year and 60% of those are due to diabetes. Diabetes can cause nerve damage and circulation problems, leading to the death of limbs, which then have to be amputated. Humans can obviously still function without a limb, and we can learn to cope, but everything is just much easier with all our limbs. In order to compensate, medical science has always tried to come up with solutions. Early prosthetics were wooden legs or arms with a hook. They couldn’t move, but people could balance or pick stuff up. Modern science has come a fairly long way since then. Let’s look at four different methods of making prosthetics that can be controlled. The simplest method is to use a harness that the wearer can control by moving other muscles. Some prosthetic arms go over the amputated limb and they have a cable that goes up the arm, across the shoulder, and is fastened to a harness on the other side. When you shrug your shoulder, it tightens the cable, and the hook will open. To close the hook, you just have to relax your shoulder. You can tell if the hook is open or closed by the tension across the shoulder. They are very basic, but they are simple. A second way is to read the signals that the nerves are transmitting. When we want to move our hand, our brain sends signals that travel down our nerves to make the relevant muscles contract or relax. Even after a limb has been amputated and the nerves have been cut, the brain still sends signals to the remaining muscles. It is possible to read the electrical signals that these nerves are transmitting and translate them into signals that a small computer can use to move a bionic hand. The sensors go on the skin and when you think about moving the hand that has been amputated, the sensors will detect the electrical signals to the muscles and open, close, or rotate the bionic hard. These are good but they are quite hard to learn how to use. You can program different muscles to do different tasks. For example, you could program a bicep flex to open the hand, and then flex the triceps to close the hand. Another way is to connect directly to the nerves. The nerves come in bundles and the bundles can be spread out before being attached to sensors. Doctors can wrap a cuff around the nerves, or they can insert tiny needles into the nerves. These sensors can detect the signals that the brain is still sending to the limb that has gone. They get accurate signals, but they are not good for the long term because nerves are very sensitive and don’t like being wrapped in things or having needles in them. The nerves develop scar tissue or become weaker. It can cause a lot of irritation and sometimes pain as well. The current most successful method involves reading the signals directly from muscles. Nerves hate being touched by sensors, but muscles don’t. In this method, doctors grafted pieces of muscle from different places in the patient’s body over the nerve bundles. They left the muscle pieces for three months and found that the muscles grew and the nerves regenerated. When the patients thought about moving their amputated limb, these new pieces of muscles took the signal from the nerves and amplified it, making it easier to read. Sensors took this information and moved an arm or a leg. Experiments have found that people with a bionic leg that uses this method can walk almost as quickly as a person with two legs. One of the most important advances of late is to use machine learning in bionic devices. The computer receives signals from the muscles and the bionic limb responds. The AI inside the computer learns each time the bionic limb is used and becomes more accurate.  These limbs are very impressive, but they do still take a long time to learn how to use them and they are not as fast or as delicate as real limbs. However, each year they improve and there will come a day when they are just the same as a real limb. And this is what I learned today. Liked this? Try these: - #483 Does blood volume decrease if a limb is amputated? - #1091 How can a salamander regenerate? - #458 What causes pins and needles? - #660 Is Earth an open or closed system? - #86 When did people start using aircraft carriers? Exploring the potential and applications of superhydrophobic surfaces
Researchers led by Prof. Zhang Junping from the Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have discussed the challenges and strategies for commercialization and widespread practical applications of superhydrophobic surfaces. The review article was published in Science Advances on Oct. 20. Superhydrophobic surfaces feature high water contact angle (≥150°) and low contact angle hysteresis (≤10°) or sliding angle (≤10°). In the past 20 years, advances have been made in fundamental research of superhydrophobic surfaces, such as preparation, bionics, wettability theory and potential applications. Preparation methods based on the design of surface structures and the discovery or synthesis of low-surface-energy materials have been developed, and various micro-, nano- and hierarchical micro-/nanostructures have been constructed. Lithography, etching, templating, deformation, and deposition are the most commonly used techniques, and new techniques are constantly being developed.

Note
A wayward message finds itself tangled up in the bionic Narrator's inbox.
To whom it may concern,
I am asking for assistance. It has been several weeks and I cannot find my Stanley. I worry he might be stuck in one of the rooms or perhaps halfway through a wall. I tried looking for him on the screens but I'm afraid I don't have access to all the rooms.
I am formally requesting permission to all cameras so I can locate my Protagonist.
Thank you.
Kindest regards,
The Narrator
He reads this message, furrowing his eyebrows as he finds it a bit too annoyingly relatable. After all, he lost his Stanley and tried to find him for ages before— but he never dared to actually ask for help in the fashion alike his colleague, he was way too proud to even consider that option.
Tumblr media
'That's sad,' he types it down, but deletes and replaces it with 'That's rather pathetic'. 'You call yourself "The Narrator" and yet you don't even have the full access to all of your Office's rooms. You could have tried to send a request to your supervisors or use other methods. But you decided to pick the easiest way instead, such like spamming your colleageus' mailboxes. That's so very unprofessional. I hope you have valid reasons to act like this, such like being a new Narrator, or having a pesky virus meddling with your systems, otherwise I honestly can't think of any logical motives of yours to be this unprofessional.' He pauses, wondering if he is getting too scoldy for a moment, then grimaces and resumes typing, in a fast frustrated manner.
'I am sure I am going to regret being so kind very soon, but fine. Fine. Very well. I'll take a few minutes of my spare time and try to give you a little help with looking for your Stanley. I hope I don't need to instruct you on how to figure out and send your own Office's coordinates—... Actually, you know what, don't bother with proving you aren't as hopeless as you look. I'll just send my hologram along with this reply. You're welcome, The Narrator.'
He lets out a long sigh, then closes his eyes and sends in his hologram together with the answer.

The Juggernaut is so cool (1963, issues 11-13)
“The Triumph of Magneto!”
Tumblr media
That cover looks naked without all the words normally on ‘em. At least we still have two Angels on the cover and it still costs 12 cents.
Tumblr media
90% sure this “Stranger” is an alien. This particular scene reminds strongly of Octus generating a boatload of dollar bills in his hand to pay for a house in the first episode of Sym-Bionic Titan… man, I’m still sad it got cancelled…
Anyways, the Stranger scares the public by walking on thin air to cross a busy thoroughfare and then phasing thru a wall. Both the X-Men and Magneto have their eyes peeled for him, but Magneto finds him first while Cyclops scares some cops when they randomly decide to pry his glasses off.
Unimpressed and threatened by the Brotherhood’s aggressive recruitment methods (literally consisting of the Evil Mutants demonstrating their powers on him in sequence, because villain reasons I guess? I don’t understand), he annihilates Mastermind.
Tumblr media
Literally nobody is sad about this; not the Stranger, not anyone in the Brotherhood, and certainly not me lol. The X-Men are attracted by the sound of his body hitting the ground floor, they fight the Brotherhood, and in the aftermath Wanda and Pietro decide to leave the Brotherhood. Magneto attempts to force the Stranger to his servitude once more, so he and Toad get instantly incapacitated too.
Tumblr media
That’s… that’s that. Magneto’s titular “triumph” is the complete and utter dissolution of his (mostly) promising villain group by some kind of incomprehensibly powerful alien deus ex machina. What… the heck?
I gotta read more.
“The Origin of Professor X!”
Tumblr media
I’d really have liked to follow up on the Stranger plot, since it was just so out of the blue, but this issue is pretty good too. Full of revelations, it is.
Xavier tells this long backstory of his childhood - in which he is blond, the advent of his powers coincides with the loss of his hair, and he was apparently really good at sports because of mind-reading, and he has a malicious half-brother named Cain Marko. Eventually the two of them end up in the Korean War, while fleeing from artillery Marko discovers the Temple of Cyttorak (“the most mysterious of all the deities of black magic!”), and Marko touches the gem at its center, gaining what the cover promises are “almost indescribable” powers as he transforms into the Juggernaut.
He’s super strong, he’s basically indestructible, he’s really big, and he can’t be stopped. Yep, almost indescribable.
In the present, the Juggernaut approaches Xavier’s mansion, led there by the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak. The X-Men get a really cool scene where they set up fortifications:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since the backstory and the present are told at the same time, there’s a nice long buildup of tension as the looming Juggernaut breaks thru each defensive layer.
Tumblr media
Yes, even though they don’t show it, he even defeats the gas which causes loss of balance. I’m making fun of the Juggernaut, and there wasn’t really a point where I ever got scared of him or what he might do to the X-Men, but the issue as a whole does a fantastic job of evoking his formidability and strength.
“Where Walks the Juggernaut!”
Tumblr media
Just as fantastic as the prior issue it builds off of. Literally none of the X-Men can do anything that more than temporarily inconveniences the Juggernaut.
Tumblr media
The whole issue is essentially a delaying action while Xavier amasses psychic power. The extra energy discharge alerts various people, including a random airline pilot, the Teen Brigade (horf), Daredevil, and the Human Torch, who is eventually cajoled into helping by a process that totally isn’t long-range hypnosis/personality modification no sirree.
Tumblr media
Beast is lucky to not get the Invincible treatment and so retains his foot unsevered. I think if I had one teensy complaint about this issue, it’s how apparently nonlethal getting hit by the Juggernaut is. It takes a little away from his menace…
Tumblr media
…but his effortless conquering of all the Danger Room’s dangers at once, as well as successfully knocking out Beast, Angel, and Iceman brings it back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Move over Ka-zar, this is the best issue of X-Men now. We see them all pushed to their limits against an awesome villain, pulling out every last techno-gizmo and use of their powers, even needing the help of another powerful hero, just for a bare chance to win against the most intimidating Marvel villain yet.
Tumblr media
Also Xavier uses his amnesia attack so much. He might have calmed down from the uptight assholish behavior of the first several issues, but he’s still a really shady guy.

Responsible AI and how to implement it in your business: A Practical Guide - Bionic
Tumblr media
This Blog was Originally Published at :
Responsible AI and how to implement it in your business: A Practical Guide — Bionic
With advanced AI at your disposal, your company is achieving things that you never imagined possible. Your customers are enjoying the fastest service, the operations are probably faster than electricity and your market intelligence has never been better. But then the unexpected occurs. A news headline flashes across your screen: “Your Company’s AI Discriminates Against Customers.” Your stomach sinks.
It is important to understand that such a scenario is not far from the realm of possibility. We have all read the stories: the AI that became racist, sexist, homophobic, and every other ‘ist’; the AI that invades privacy; the AI that inspires Black Mirror episodes that were based on dystopian futuristic technologies.
However, the stark reality that faces us while using artificial intelligence is that while AI holds the potential to be phenomenal, it also holds a lot of potential danger.
But here’s the good news: At this stage, you have the power to build something different for your business. You got to know what is responsible AI and how to implement it in your business. With AI implementation in place and being a part of your company’s guidelines, you will be able to embrace and promote all the benefits of AI while preventing any harm to people and your business reputation.
The journey to effective responsible artificial intelligence is not always smooth but is a necessity in this world we live in today. It is not simply about mitigating risks of legal action; it is about values, company culture, and the vision for the future that can be made possible by AI.
What is Responsible AI?
AI, as a technological wonder, is said to redefine industries, enhance health care, and even solve problems like climate change.
But what if things could be more picture-perfect? We’ve seen glimpses of this darker side of AI: filtering methods that prejudge female applicants, security systems that fail to correctly identify persons of color and flawed algorithms that reinforce prejudice.
The potential for AI to “hallucinate” or generate false information poses another significant risk. We’ve witnessed this AI hallucination: AI models produce biased content, discriminating against certain groups, or amplifying misinformation. These are not just technical glitches; they can have profound societal consequences.
Responsible AI is the perfect remedy for these risks. It is about creating AI that is not only smart but also moral and that acts fairly and honestly. This is like a set of guidelines for the use of Artificial Intelligence for the right purpose to enhance the well-being of society.
In the context of healthcare, responsible AI means that diagnostic algorithms are fair and effective across any demographic. In finance, it implies designing loan approval frameworks that do not continue to reinforce prejudice in lending. Similarly, in the criminal justice system, it means harnessing the power of AI for decision-making while not perpetuating an unfair cycle of discrimination.
Tumblr media
The Stakes Are High
The negative impacts of AI are not some distant possible scenarios, but actual threats, that are already taking place, and which may pose a serious threat to an industry or firm. For instance, consider IBM which once had to respond to a legal complaint that involved claims of misuse of data on a weather application. (Know more)
No entrepreneur wants to be caught up in such a storm of numerous legal issues.
There’s Optum which has been accused of having an algorithm that delays treatment for sicker black patients than for white ones. A healthcare company, whose principle is to provide remedies to society, found on the other end of the stick accused of causing harm. This is not only a PR disaster; it is an absolute breach of trust, in its most basic sense of the word. (Know more)
A major financial giant, Goldman Sachs, faces controversy over allegations of gender discrimination regarding credit limits for the Apple Card. (Know more)
An algorithm, meant to be objective, perpetuates the very inequalities it should be blind to. Who can forget the Cambridge Analytica scandal which involved the leakage of millions of users’ data and threatened the reliability of Facebook?
These are not mere isolated cases that one can easily brush aside or ignore. It’s a pattern, a red flag pointing at the directions that we could be moving into when AI becomes deeper and more entrenched. The cases bring out the fact that the application of AI deepens existing prejudices and discriminations, and invades our privacy. This aspect alone results in significant reputational loss, huge legal expenses incurred, and raising ethical questions.
What Responsible AI Means for Your Business
AI must be a responsible one and it is not about compliance anymore but should also be designed so that it comes up with the least AI hallucinations. It is about more than just not making some black headlines or having some legal issues; it is about making your AI ethical all through.
In practice, responsible AI means Grounding AI with real-world information ensuring your AI systems are:
Fair: Suppose, there is a hiring algorithm that repeatedly fails to select deserving candidates from the marginalized community. And that is not only unjust, it is unwise for any business to miss the potential that it has at its fingertips. Responsible AI aims at fairness and making sure that an opportunity of equal chance is present for everyone.
Transparent: Consider a customer service chatbot that will provide answers that look as though they are random. Frustrating, right? Responsible AI refers to the practice of attempting to explain how an AI operates, the data it utilizes, and the reasons it arrives at certain conclusions.
Accountable: In the wake of a technical glitch in an AI-assisted medical gadget, who bears the blame? When it comes to responsible AI, it’s quite clear. Clear accountability makes certain that problems are resolved on time and there is always a person of recourse for that technology.
Privacy-Preserving: Take, for instance, a facial recognition system that takes your picture and stores it without your permission. Responsible AI always considers user privacy and complies with data protection laws by being careful with users’ information.
In addition to these principles, responsible AI is about creating correct and dependable AI systems. It is about making certain that AI should not make things worse and that it should improve the situation for everyone involved. By following the principles of responsible AI, you are not only trying to avoid harm; you are building a world in which AI would be positively beneficial to humanity.
9 Ways to Operationalize Responsible AI
Below is the step-by-step approach to implementing responsible AI in your business-
Leverage Existing Infrastructure: If your company has any form of decision-making board on data such as a data governance board, then use this as a reference when developing your AI ethics program. This makes it possible for you to incorporate the ethical aspects in your decisions.
Create a Tailored Ethical Risk Framework: Determine which ethical principles are most relevant to your sector and organization. Outline the kinds of risks you have in your AI applications, and then create a way of handling them.
Learn from Healthcare: As mentioned earlier, ethical challenges have always been a sore point in the healthcare industry when addressing issues of patient care as well as data. Use their strategies to tackle issues such as informed consent, privacy, and autonomy regarding AI.
Empower Product Managers: Provide instructions and resources to your product managers that will enable them to properly identify and address ethical challenges all through the life cycle of a product. It also means making a sound decision in areas such as trade-offs between explainability and accuracy.
Build Organizational Awareness: Make sure that all the employees, from the top managers to the low-level workers, comprehend the risks of practical artificial intelligence applications. Brief them on the various ethical standards, and explain that they should seek to report any concerns they may have regarding any unethical issues in the future.
Incentivize Ethical Behavior: Encourage high engagement by providing incentives for those who report and contribute to managing ethical concerns. In this case, assure your subordinates and clients that ethical practices are encouraged and appreciated at your company.
Monitor and Engage Stakeholders: Closely track the actual effects that the AI systems you have implemented are bringing to the table. It is also important to solicit feedback from users and other stakeholders and make modifications where necessary. This element is crucial in establishing trust and can be accomplished by constantly providing clear information in the process.
Grounding AI: Integrate AI grounding techniques into your development process to ensure AI systems are tethered to reliable sources of truth and human values. Grounding techniques can help mitigate biases, hallucinations, and other potential risks by ensuring AI outputs are traceable, explainable, and aligned with ethical principles.
Utilize Human-in-the-Loop Approaches: Introducing humans in the loop that check and review outputs produced by the AI tool, especially in sensitive matters.
Tumblr media
Additional Considerations
Responsible AI is not a switch that can be turned on and off once changes and improvements have been made. To truly embed it in your company’s DNA, consider these additional steps:
Cultivate Diversity: Your AI is only as good as the people who build it. Make sure that your development teams contain a fairly broad set of viewpoints to avoid bias from influencing your algorithms. Just like in a jury, you ensure that there is representation from as many sides as possible to increase the chances of an impartial, or fair outcome.
Regular Checkups: Even the healthiest systems require some level of maintenance now and then. You should occasionally audit your AI to identify any biases or other forms of abnormality that are likely to develop over time. It’s akin to giving your AI a check-up before it develops an uninvited issue.
Stay Ahead of the Curve: Ethical questions have always followed the nature and development of AI, with new challenges emerging in tandem with new advancements. Make learning a priority. Get updated on current trends in the field, the best and recommended practices as well as current laws that regulate the application of AI. It is like buying your AI model a software update for ethics.
Conclusion
AI and Machine Learning can open up opportunities like no other technology in the past has been able to ever. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that this technological revolution is not entirely free from some significant ethical questions. As we find ourselves at the cusp of this new age, education regarding these technologies and the responsible use of AI becomes imperative.
Thus, by transforming ourselves through the knowledge and skills embedded in AI, we establish a powerful tool and promote the intelligent usage of responsible AI. The course towards an AI-positive future where responsible artificial intelligence is a product of human intellect and conscience is what the current times demand.
Are you ready to experience the full potential of AI without compromising on ethics or integrity? Bionic AI offers a transformative solution that empowers your business while upholding the highest standards of responsible AI practices. Request a demo now!

03/03/24 - Muir McNeil
Founded in 2009 by Paul McNeil and Hamish Muir, MuirMcNeil’s activities are focussed on exploring systematic and algorithmic methods in type design, graphic design and moving image.
I love the TenPoint project; it reminds me of my Chimera typeface whereby it is almost illegible, however due to bionic reading you can still make out the shapes of the letters and read the words. They included an interesting story on how it came about, which I would like to do for the display of my Chimera project as I feel it is important to show where the font came from.
I also liked how, on their loading screen, the image would change each time you went on the website to a different full-bleed image from their portfolio. This could be good to replicate for my portfolio if I learnt how to do it.

The technology could aid communication for people who are unable to speak due to illness or injury, including stroke or paralysis. It could also enable seamless communication between humans and machines, such as the operation of a bionic arm or robot.
The study has been selected as a spotlight paper at the NeurIPS conference, a top-tier annual meeting that showcases world-leading research on artificial intelligence and machine learning, held in New Orleans.
The research was led by Distinguished Professor CT Lin, Director of the GrapheneX-UTS HAI Centre, together with first author Yiqun Duan and fellow PhD candidate Jinzhou Zhou from the UTS Faculty of Engineering and IT.
In the study participants silently read passages of text while wearing a cap that recorded electrical brain activity through their scalp using an electroencephalogram (EEG). A demonstration of the technology can be seen in this video.
The EEG wave is segmented into distinct units that capture specific characteristics and patterns from the human brain. This is done by an AI model called DeWave developed by the researchers. DeWave translates EEG signals into words and sentences by learning from large quantities of EEG data.
“This research represents a pioneering effort in translating raw EEG waves directly into language, marking a significant breakthrough in the field,” said Distinguished Professor Lin.
“It is the first to incorporate discrete encoding techniques in the brain-to-text translation process, introducing an innovative approach to neural decoding. The integration with large language models is also opening new frontiers in neuroscience and AI,” he said.
Previous technology to translate brain signals to language has either required surgery to implant electrodes in the brain, such as Elon Musk’s Neuralink, or scanning in an MRI machine, which is large, expensive, and difficult to use in daily life.
These methods also struggle to transform brain signals into word level segments without additional aids such as eye-tracking, which restrict the practical application of these systems. The new technology is able to be used either with or without eye-tracking.
The UTS research was carried out with 29 participants. This means it is likely to be more robust and adaptable than previous decoding technology that has only been tested on one or two individuals, because EEG waves differ between individuals.
The use of EEG signals received through a cap, rather than from electrodes implanted in the brain, means that the signal is noisier. In terms of EEG translation however, the study reported state-of the art performance, surpassing previous benchmarks.
“The model is more adept at matching verbs than nouns. However, when it comes to nouns, we saw a tendency towards synonymous pairs rather than precise translations, such as ‘the man’ instead of ‘the author’,” said Duan.
“We think this is because when the brain processes these words, semantically similar words might produce similar brain wave patterns. Despite the challenges, our model yields meaningful results, aligning keywords and forming similar sentence structures,” he said.
The translation accuracy score is currently around 40% on BLEU-1. The BLEU score is a number between zero and one that measures the similarity of the machine-translated text to a set of high-quality reference translations. The researchers hope to see this improve to a level that is comparable to traditional language translation or speech recognition programs, which is closer to 90%.
The research follows on from previous brain-computer interface technology developed by UTS in association with the Australian Defence Force that uses brainwaves to command a quadruped robot, which is demonstrated in this ADF video.

And here is my personal favorite character out of Klaus's band of misfits! One-eyed gunslinging mercenary, Cole Fawkes!
(Click read more for Lore!)
Delta-94, “The Timberwolves” , A special forces unit of the ERA military forces that were formed specifically for the purpose of fighting the Confederacy of Earth's Liberation, "CEL" as they are more commonly known, and stopping their conquest in their tracks. These brave soldiers took to the frontlines against these insurgents for years, keeping them behind their borders in Fordahl by any means necessary. The Timberwolves weren’t bound by the rules of engagement that ERA forces followed strictly. As such, they would use unconventional methods of warfare to fight off their enemies, forcing many marines and commanding officers to raise eyebrows at them. This unit, while unpredictable, was highly effective against ERA’s enemies. But no member of the unit was more unpredictable than their second-in-command… Sergeant Major Colson Fawkes.
An orphaned slum dweller of the colonies turned soldier of fortune, Cole was the very thing the Timberwolves were missing early on in their career, a man who wasn't afraid to take risks to get the job done. His survival instincts and quick thinking would soon earn him the respect of his comrades, scoring them one victory after the next against ERA's enemies, especially CEL. They gave him the codename "Cyclops" due to his missing left eye, which he lost when he was only thirteen, and despite offering to install a bionic eye into his empty socket, he politely refused, feeling cybernetics would only bring further complications to their operations. As his tour of duty progressed, Cole would soon find himself falling in love with his own CO, Captain Ashlynn “Red-Eye” Hart. The two shared many of their days off duty together, having a drink at the local bar and listening to old world rock'n'roll. Balancing out their duties in ERA with the time they spent together off duty wasn't easy, but they always seemed to make it work, which finally led up to Cole getting down on one knee and popping her the question.
The day of their marriage, however, would be the day the Timberwolves' career would finally come to end. The unit, and all present at the wedding, found themselves attacked by an unknown group of assassins sent to kill Captain Hart and Sergeant Fawkes, as well as any witnesses to their mission. It was on that day that Delta-94 made its final stand against these mysterious enemies, determined to bring as many of them down to hell with them as possible! Though it seemed they would be able to make it out alive, Captain Hart was, unfortunately, assassinated by the attackers successfully, leaving a heartbroken Cole to fly into a mad rage and kill every last one of the assassins that remained, not even giving them a chance to escape or regroup. The attack left Cole, Lupin “Wolfman” O’Donnell, and Sandra “Nightingale” Cohen as the only survivors, resulting in the unit being disbanded and the survivors going their separate ways.
Cutting ties with his former military comrades, Cole soon took on a career as a mercenary, completing jobs with everything his tour of duty taught him along with his own flare of cruel and unusual tactics to outsmart his enemies. Despite his brutal methods, Cole's work earned him a reputation as a highly respected gun for hire, known by many as "The One-Eyed Wolf" . He would've likely spent his whole life working alone in the mercenary business, if not for Goddess Zephym. Becoming the only god he trusts on Terrene, Cole would later help Zephym in her quest to find a new disciple, which in turn would lead her to train a young Colonist from Emerald city named Klaus Bardawulf. Unfortunately, their initial encounter led to Cole nearly killing him before Zephym had the chance to induct him into her Tutorage. Had she not stepped in and chased him off, he would have likely have caused great harm to the boy...
In spite of his recklessness, Klaus and Cole would grow to become good friends and partners in the adventuring business, with Cole acting almost as a second father figure to the boy as they progressed further into their journey. And though his careless behavior and snarky remarks do tend to cause trouble for the group, Cole's instincts have saved the party from certain death on many occasions, implementing tactics that quickly turn the battle in favor of Klaus and his friends. Since his battle with Klaus, He has been an invaluable asset to the party, acquiring a multitude of curiosities to aid in their journey as well as safeguarding Zephym's disciple from harm while he makes his mark on Terrene, perhaps heralding the Soldier of Fortune's luck finally turning around after his misfortunate tour of duty.

gojo satoru x reader
26. “i was supposed to take a shower, alone, but go ahead jump right in” from the 100 different kisses prompt list
Tumblr media
Satoru decides that you must have bionic hearing.
He swears that he’s quiet, silent even, when methodically tip-toeing down the hallway. His hand is barely touching the doorknob to the bathroom as he twists it painfully slow, so it doesn’t creak or click. Once it can turn no more, he begins to gently push on the wooden door, hardly applying any pressure on it as it agonizingly creeps open. After a few seconds, when he decides that the gap is large enough for him to softly sneak through, he does so.
Now fully in the bathroom, he smirks at his own reflection in the mirror. So stealthy. He’s incredibly impressed with his assassin-like slyness when the echo of your voice catches him off guard.
“Get out.”
He finds himself glancing at his reflection again, almost as if he’s conversing with it, asking is she serious? He half expects his mirror image to shrug its shoulders back and give him a look that reads I know, right?
“How’d you even know I was in here?” he lets out in a whine. He was so quiet, so careful, and yet you still heard him sneak in over the harsh patter of the water from the shower hitting the curtain.
“Out,” you repeat, letting the stream of hot water soak your skin. You always liked your water piping hot—Gojo always made it a point to complain about it feeling like “lava” whenever the two of you showered together.
The bathroom is now filled with steam from the heat and Satoru can no longer look to his reflection for support, as the mirror is covered in condensation. He takes a long slender pointer finger and draws a smiley face in the dew—he can already hear you scolding him about leaving fingerprints later, but that’s a problem for another hour. Right now, he has another challenge to overcome.
“C’mon, sweet girl,” he pesters, slightly moving the curtain so he can stick his head into your personal bubble within the shower. He does so successfully when he’s met with your rolling eyes and somewhat cold shoulder.
“What do you want from me?” you provoke him, head directly placed beneath the shower head as you let the water pour onto your face. It feels like it hides you from his intense staring, but you know better than to think that anything could shield you from his eyes.
“Can’t I just want to be close to my baby?”
“No, you can’t.”
There’s more with Gojo. There’s always more when it comes to him. He can be conniving. Calculated. He’s good at getting what he wants with a simple bat of his eyelashes and flash of a charming smile. While you know you’re not strong enough to deny him, you are strong enough to make him work for it. To make him dig his heels in a little deeper as he stands swaying in place for just a little longer than usual.
“I was supposed to take a shower, alone, but go ahead jump right in,” you speak sarcastically.
You already knew from the moment you sensed him in the bathroom that you were not going to be showering alone. Satoru is annoying and insistent on getting his way, no matter the situation. You make a mental note of teasing him for it later, when you're less tired and more clothed.
Fully aware of your teasing tone, Gojo couldn't care less as he immediately starts ridding himself of his clothes.
“Why thank you for the invitation. If you insist,” he coos as his shirt is lifted over his head and his socks are thrown across the room.
The warm air from inside of the curtain embraces him before you do, still putting up your cold front. Satoru sees past it, as he always does. He inches closer, and places the sweetest kiss onto your lips. It’s far too short and Satoru knows this—he knows it’s just enough to get you to bite, and bite you do.
This time it’s you leaning in, hands on his neck craning it to your height. It’s longer than the last one, more passionate. Yet, it still remains delicate as you feel his tongue prod at the entrance of your mouth. You kiss him twice more before letting him slip it inside.
Make him work for it.
His hands find the small of your back, further pressing you into him. The heat from his kiss is enough to melt your ice. When you pull away to catch your breath, the sight before you is nothing less than beautiful. Satoru is flushed (from the heat of the water or the heat of your kiss, you don’t ask) and smitten, a dreamy look in his eyes as he continues to admire you. You let him because you know him. You know for so long, he was lonely. The strongest, only when he needed to be poked and prodded around like a show pony. You know that he never thought he’d get the chance to do this, to be here, with you, doing something as mundane as making-out in the shower.
You decide to let him stay, though the two of you both know that it was truly decided long ago.
You hand him a bottle of your shampoo and turn your back to him, leaving him to stare at the back of your head.
“If you’re gonna be in here, you might as well be of good use,” you mutter as he begins to lather up his hands with the citrus-scented liquid. He likes being of service to you. If it’s the reparations he must pay for his need to be this close to you at all times, he’d wash your hair three times a day.
He plants a kiss to your wet shoulder before getting to work massaging the shampoo into your scalp, muttering something into your skin as you feel a grin spread across his face.
“So bossy this morning.”

Hey @staff can we talk about bionic reading?
because jester found out about it *yesterday* and stayed up all night and now it’s implemented into counter.social.  Like as an option, for those who want/can be helped by it.
Is this on your radar at all?  People there are loving it.  It’s helping them read faster, and more accurately.

Image 1 screenshot from Counter.social post from JΞSŦΞR ✪ ΔCŦUΔL³³°¹ @th3j35t3r ANNOUNCE: Yesterday I heard about something cool called 'bionic reading'. I tweeted about it & a lot of folks were stunned. Today, 24 hours later, real-time 'Bionic Reading Mode' is fully integrated into https://counter.social as a preferences option in our app & desktop browser. 👍
Image 2 text reading
Bionic Reading is a new method facilitating the reading process by guiding the eyes through text with artificial fixation points. As a result, the reader is only focusing on the highlighted initial letters and lets the brain center complete the word. In a digital world dominated by shallow forms of reading, Bionic Reading aims to encourage a more in-depth reading and understanding of written content.
(and nah this isn’t me schilling for CoSo. I’m well aware it’s not the site for everyone.  dude just has great response and turnaround)
